The stories in this collection taken together narrate the education of the heart, a heart uprooted by civil war in Spain and given refuge in Mexico, launched on a new life, to stitch them together to form a coherent whole.

It tackles the history of Love as a cultural idea in the two decades that came after the Civil War as a substantial part of human comprehension of reality and as a way of organizing individual and social practices. This idea, this book suggests, played a crucial role on women subordination, through the configuration of their identity and subjectivity.

A popular account of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. Ch. 13 (pp. 247-265), "Los Reyes Católicos y la Inquisición: Judíos y moriscos", deals with the establishment of the Inquisition and the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. Asserts that the Catholic Kings' abandonment of their protective policy toward the Jews in 1487 was motivated by religious and political considerations, not by an antisemitic attitude in the modern sense of the term. The decree of expulsion was intended to provoke the conversion of the Jews, not their mass emigration.
