A popular account of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. Ch. 13 (pp. 247-265), "Los Reyes Católicos y la Inquisición: Judíos y moriscos", deals with the establishment of the Inquisition and the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. Asserts that the Catholic Kings' abandonment of their protective policy toward the Jews in 1487 was motivated by religious and political considerations, not by an antisemitic attitude in the modern sense of the term. The decree of expulsion was intended to provoke the conversion of the Jews, not their mass emigration.
