Este libro es una guía práctica dirigida a todos aquellos usuarios de Windows que desean comenzar a utilizar Linux. De forma práctica, se muestran las posibilidades de sustituir Windows por Linux y realizar todas las tareas que habitualmente se ejecutan con el PC. Para la confección de esta guía se ha elegido Mandriva, a pesar de que existe una gran variedad de distribuciones de GNU/Linux, por dos razones fundamentales: la facilidad de uso de su interfaz gráfica y la gran cantidad de aplicaciones listas que incluye para su instalación; todas las comentadas en el libro pueden instalarse en cualquier otra distribución, lo que significa que los conceptos aprendidos sobre Mandriva resultan útiles en otras distribuciones populares como Ubuntu, openSUSE y Fedora. El libro trata inicialmente las características de Linux, y cómo instalar y configurar Mandriva, después repasa las principales aplicaciones incluidas en esta distribución y, a continuación, se centra en diferentes grupos: ofimática y productividad, Internet, multimedia, gráficos y fotografía digital. Con el objetivo de facilitar la transición entre sistemas operativos, en cada aplicación de Mandriva se busca su equivalente en Windows, de forma que permita al lector familiarizarse rápidamente con el sistema operativo.
