Fue el comentario de Mesenero Romanso sobre la vida y los costumbres de España de esta época pero también fue una autobiografía del autor. La primera edición se publicó en La Ilustración Española y Americana en marzo de 1878 y desde entonces fue reeditada y republicada muchas veces.
