Lope escribió una decena de comedias cuyo asunto principal, desde la tregua de Niza (1538) hasta la recuperación de Salvador de Bahía (1625), está tomado de la historia de su tiempo. Este libro indaga en las circunstancias de las que surgieron dichos textos, a menudo al servicio de poderes concretos.
