Este libro pretende contar la historia del I Duque de Lerma, don Francisco de Sandoval y Rojas (1553-1625), que llegó a ser un dos españoles más poderosos de su tiempo. Hombre de confianza de Felipe III, era en realidad el verdadero gobernante del reino. Nacido en una familia al servicio de la Corona, pero sin recursos económicos, logró amasar la fortuna del momento y controlar tal cantidad de oficios que perdió. Hubo numerosas voces que se levantaron contra él, entre ellas la de la propia reina.
