Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) fue uno de los mas destacados compositores italianos de la primera mitad del siglo XVIII. Miembro de la aristocracia veneciana, firmo como musico dilettante un gran numero de composiciones vocales e instrumentales. Testigo privilegiado del esplendor operistico que se vivio en la Venecia de su tiempo, El teatro a la moda (ca. 1720) constituye un testimonio unico sobre el fascinante mundo del melodrama barroco. Su estilo satirico proporciona una imagen nitida y viva de los verdaderos protagonistas del mismo (cantantes, empresarios, compositores...), aunque Marcello opta por ofrecernos un retrato « al reves, es decir, amplificando sus defectos y enormidades para producir un resultado ironico, ameno y abiertamente humoristico. La publicacion, por primera vez en castellano, de El teatro a la moda ofrece al lector espanol una oportunidad unica para conocer las peculiaridades de la opera barroca desde una doble optica musical y sociologica. Esta edicion cuenta conun amplio estudio introductorio del musicologo italiano Stefano Russomanno --responsable tambien de la traduccion-- que aporta las claves necesarias para entender el contexto en el que nacieron las agudas diatribas de un libro que, casi tres siglos mas tarde, no ha perdido un apice de actualidad.
